In an automatic there is no clutch and no gear changes to manage, which leaves you free to concentrate on steering, observation and the road ahead. The trade-off is what your licence lets you drive afterwards.
Your licence only covers automatic cars. If you later want to drive a manual, you can upgrade by passing a driving test in a manual car. You do not need to take the theory test again.
Your licence covers both manual and automatic cars. Learning in a manual takes in clutch control and gear changes as well as everything else.
The practical test itself works in the same way in an automatic as in a manual. Not sure which suits you? You can switch between manual and automatic lessons with us if you change your mind, and your instructor can help you decide after your first lesson. Want to test yourself first? Book a mock driving test in a manual or automatic car.
